China and Kazakhstan established diplomatic relations on January 3, 1992. In December 2002, China and Kazakhstan signed the Treaty of Good Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation and the two sides announced the development of a comprehensive strategic partnership.
China and Kazakhstan have carried out good cooperation in oil and gas and other fields. The two sides jointly built China Kazakhstan crude oil pipeline, the first cross-border oil pipeline in China, and the A/B/C three lines of China Central Asia natural gas pipeline all pass through Kazakhstan. The cooperation between the two countries in the fields of education, culture and science and technology has yielded fruitful results. China has set up five Confucius Institutes in Kazakhstan. By July 2021, China and Kazakhstan have established 19 pairs of sister provinces, prefectures and cities, of which Beijing and Astana are sister cities to each other.
In 2021, the bilateral trade volume between China and Kazakhstan has reached US $25.25 billion, up 17.4% year on year. From January to July 2022, the bilateral trade volume between China and Kazakhstan reached 17.7 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 19.3%.
The first stop of the Silk Road Economic Belt, which stretches from China to the west, is Kazakhstan. The first target of China's capacity cooperation with countries along the line is Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is also the first country to connect China's development strategies with those of countries along the Belt and Road. The joint construction of the the Belt and Road has achieved a series of early gains. The two sides signed an important document on cooperation between the construction of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the "Bright Road". The two sides have established a regular cooperation mechanism on production capacity cooperation, identified 51 key projects with a total amount of 27 billion US dollars, and a large number of major projects have borne fruit. There are many highlights in the connectivity cooperation between the two sides, with more than 1200 China EU freight trains passing through Kazakhstan. China Kazakhstan cooperation will certainly become a model for jointly building the "the Belt and Road".
